Born into an Italian family on Long Island, at an early age, Chef Derrick Prince learned how powerful and important food can be in people’s lives. Derrick went on to become an aspiring musician making his living doing web development, but his love for food never left him. He learned new techniques as much as he could on his own through books, tv and the internet. In 2011, he had earned himself a spot on the second season of Fox’s MasterChef, a competitive cooking program for amateur home chefs. He came in 6th place on the show and was featured in over 75% of that season’s episodes.

After MasterChef, Derrick had to get out of the office chair and behind a stove – for good. He took every opportunity he could to change his career. He staged at Chef Graham Elliot’s Michelin starred restaurant, then went out to California to help open a food truck and then again to consult on the opening of a small ocean front café. When back in New York, he did cooking demos, pop-up restaurants, and even gave the occasional cooking lesson all while still supporting himself with web development.

In 2012 Derrick met Chef Chris Santos, who helped him turn his dream into a reality. Derrick started working at Beauty & Essex for Chef Santos that winter. He spent the next six months splitting his time as a line cook and web developer, working seven days week before he finally gave up the office chair altogether, becoming a full time line cook. Shortly after that he was promoted to AM Sous Chef of Chef Santos’ LES hot spot, The Stanton Social.

During his time at The Stanton Social, Derrick solidified himself as a chef. It was there where he learned how to run a crew, manage a kitchen and was able to contribute his own creative dishes to the menu. From The Stanton Social, Derrick went on to be one of the chefs for the opening team at VANDAL. After the successful opening, Derrick returned to The Stanton Social for two years as the Chef de Cuisine where he lead the team to greatness. Now he has returned back to VANDAL as the Chef de Cuisine where he cannot wait to start creating new and exciting food and become a part of the iconic restaurant’s amazing legacy.
