Hi my name is Gelo, I’ve been bartending in New York City for 10 plus years. I originally moved to America to work for the United Nations but ever since I was a little kid in the Philippines, it has been my dream to be a bartender.

It hasn’t been easy for me to get to where I am now; I was barbacking for 7 years before anyone gave me a chance to bartend—but the work has been extremely fulfilling every step of the way.

For me, being a tiki bartender isn’t just about the act of making drinks or developing and implementing new concepts like my draft cocktails. Not many people are aware that Tiki culture actually originated from a Filipino bartender at Don the Beachcomber Bar in California. In part, this is one of the reasons why I’m so proud of the work that I do.

The job itself and the industry as a whole are fun and exciting on a daily basis; however, the biggest factor in what makes it my passion is that in doing this work that I love, it allows me to embrace and spread the lifestyle as well as my culture.
