Born and raised in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, Mark Iacono grew up fully immersed in Italian-American culture. Born and raised in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, Mark Iacono grew up fully immersed in Italian-American culture. However, he did not grow up thinking he would one day own a pizzeria, let alone one as bustling as Lucali. When Louie’s Candy Store, a shop Mark’s father used to take him to growing up, shut down, Mark decided to rent the space and open his own restaurant. A self-taught chef, he learned everything from how to use yeast to how to roll out pizza dough only after Lucali opened for business. Since opening in 2006, the restaurant has built a strong fan base, including celebrities like Beyoncé, Jay-Z, David Beckham, Al Pacino, and John Legend (just to name a few). Insider even named Lucali “the most legendary pizza restaurant in Brooklyn” and the it has received countless other positive reviews. Mark has appeared in New York Magazine, Insider, the Today Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers and Netflix’s Ugly Delicious. He is currently the host of Thrillist’s Really Dough? series.

What is your favorite NYC restaurant? And what is your go-to dish? NYC is the mecca of restaurants and there are way too many to say I have a favorite. What is your ultimate meal? Sunday dinner with family is my go to, but also I also enjoy late night Thai food with my Thrillist crew after wrapping on Really Dough. What three things are always in your pantry? Tomato sauce, garlic and oregano. If you could cook with anyone, who would that be? I can't choose just one: Anthony Bourdain, Mario Carbone, and Missy Robbins.
