Karina Guimaraes was born in the suburbs of São Paulo, Brazil. She immigrated to the United States in December of 1999 with the purpose of learning English. While attending Montclair State University in Montclair NJ, for Linguistics, she started showcasing her culinary background when babysitting a family of 8. She started making all different Brazilian dishes and the American family loved it.

The passion for cooking and the desire to introduce Brazilian culture to friends and family sparked a dream come true when she moved to Astoria and started working at an Italian restaurant. She fell in love with the restaurant business. Three years later, New York Pao de Queijo was established in Astoria in 2007 and Casa Theodoro Pizzeria in 2016.

New York Pao de Queijo is a Brazilian Café located in Astoria, Queens and its menu consists of fresh homemade burgers, pastries, and the signature attraction pao de queijo (the cheese bread that gives the restaurant its name). It has been ten years of hard and rewarding work serving Brazilian’s most popular and authentic traditional foods.

The cozy Brazilian café has been recognized by Time Out Magazine as one of the best places to eat outside Manhattan and subsequently won Time Out Awards for “Best Brazilian Restaurant” in Astoria. It has been chosen as one of the “25 Best Brazilian Restaurants” in the country by Business Insider.

Guimaraes is a mother of two beautiful children and always keeps family and tradition first. She makes it a priority to create different dishes when cooking for her children – her “taste testers” before introducing a new menu item.
