St. John Frizell (SIN-jin) is an award-winning writer, bartender, and “restaurateur of skill and passion” (The New York Times). Frizell got his start in the culinary world as a copy editor for Bon Appétit, but quit in 2005 to travel the world in the footsteps of legendary bon vivant and cocktail culture writer Charles H. Baker. Upon his return stateside Frizell landed at Pegu Club to learn the art of mixology, and in 2009 went on to open Fort Defiance, his critically-acclaimed cafe-bar in Red Hook, Brooklyn, which was reborn as the Fort Defiance General Store in 2020 to serve the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Frizell most recently reopened Gage & Tollner, an historic oyster and chop house in Downtown Brooklyn dating back to 1879, as well as the first brick-and-mortar outpost of his lauded tiki pop-up, Sunken Harbor Club, on the second floor upstairs. A Bermuda outpost of Sunken Harbor Club will open at Cambridge Beaches Resort this Summer 2022. In addition to serving as the drinks correspondent for Men’s Journal, Frizell’s writing on food, culinary history, and cocktails has appeared in Bon Appétit, Saveur, and Fine Cooking, and published in the Best Food Writing series.
