Helen Nguyen

Helen Nguyen is the chef and restaurateur behind Saigon Social and Cô Lạc in New York City. A first-generation Vietnamese American raised in Seattle, Nguyen draws inspiration from the soulful flavors of Central Vietnam, her family’s home cooking, and the experiences that shaped her path to the kitchen. Before pursuing a culinary career, Nguyen worked in real estate in Seattle. She later moved to New York City, graduated from the Institute of Culinary Education, and refined her skills through classical French training. She spent three years working with the catering and private events team at Restaurant Daniel, developing the technique and discipline that would later inform her own distinctive approach to Vietnamese cuisine. Nguyen began sharing her cooking through pop-ups, where she combined treasured Vietnamese flavors with modern ideas and French technique. Those events ultimately evolved into Saigon Social, her Lower East Side restaurant dedicated to Vietnamese comfort food.

Although the restaurant’s planned March 2020 opening was interrupted by the pandemic, Nguyen quickly transformed the space into a takeout operation and prepared meals for hospital workers and community organizations. Her resilience, generosity, and commitment to bringing people together through food became defining parts of the restaurant’s story. At Saigon Social, Nguyen offers a deeply personal interpretation of Vietnamese cooking—one that respects tradition while embracing creativity. The restaurant received two stars from The New York Times, and Nguyen was named a 2022 James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: New York State. She has since expanded her culinary vision with Cô Lạc, continuing to explore the breadth, regionality, and evolution of Vietnamese cuisine. Through every dish, Nguyen celebrates heritage, memory, and community. Her cooking invites guests to experience Vietnamese food as both comforting and dynamic, connecting the flavors of her upbringing with the energy and diversity of New York City today.
