A cultural tastemaker, family man, and renowned American chef, JJ Johnson is a man of many things. He is most recognized for his fresh and innovative approach to African Caribbean cuisine.
JJ developed a passion for culinary from the tender age of seven. While growing up between New York City and the Poconos, PA, he quickly became inspired by the flavors and cultures of his diverse upbringing.
After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), JJ honed his skills in some of the world’s top kitchens throughout New York City. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including a James Beard Foundation Award for the best American cookbook for Between Harlem and Heaven. He has also been featured on multiple television shows, including Food Network’s Chopped, Netflix’s Street Food, and Selena + Chef on HBO Max. Additionally, JJ has his television show called ‘Just Eats with Chef JJ’ airing for its fifth season on TV One’s network Cleo TV this fall. Chef JJ’s highly anticipated cookbook with Danica Novgorodof, “The Simple Art of Rice: Recipes from Around the World for the Heart of Your Table,” released in September 2023 by Macmillan Publishers, was listed as a New York Times best cookbook of 2023.
JJ’s culinary philosophy centers on showcasing the diversity and richness of the African diaspora while also challenging traditional ideas about what these cuisines can be. Through this philosophy, JJ has won numerous accolades and awards, including a two-timed Nation’s Restaurant News Power List and nominated by the James Beard Foundation Awards nine times in the media and chef categories. He’s cooked in Ghana, Israel, and has visited a 7 generation rice farm in India.
As witnessed at FIELDTRIP, Johnson strongly advocates for sustainability, working with local farmers and producers to source the freshest ingredients for his dishes. As one of America’s most exciting fast casual brands, FIELDTRIP has taken the culinary world by storm, continuing expansion with 3 locations in NYC and one new location in the Bahamas at Atlantis Paradise Island. JJ believes some of the most dynamic cultures are linked to rice, and with America being a diverse nation, we all grew up within a “rice culture.” Henceforth the slogan, “Rice is Culture ” at FIELDTRIP.
Today, he is a community champion. His passions regarding food justice and equity, drive him to raise awareness within the food industry, using his platform to create change. JJ continues to push boundaries in the culinary world, with plans to develop restaurants that celebrate and share the vibrant flavors and cultures of Africa and the Caribbean.
Through JJ’s expertise, he continues to unite communities and show the world that rice isn’t just a staple; it is the backbone of culture.
